TWENTY-SIX

Once the tension between Sarah and Karen had dissipated, Jackson took stock of the situation. It was still early afternoon, the sun high in the sky despite their walk across the island and the altercation at their assumed camp.

“I’m going to start mapping the island,” he said.

“We really should stick together,” Emily cautioned. “Mark should never have left alone. The last thing we need is to lose you, too.”

“We haven’t lost Mark,” Karen said. Her face belied her true feelings.

“No, I didn’t mean that,” Emily said. “Temporarily. He’s just gone temporarily.” After Karen’s fight with Sarah, the last thing she wanted was to get on the wrong side of the software engineer.

“Someone needs to fetch water. I know where there’s a stream. I can map out the island on the way; I’ll go farther if I can.”

“You’ll have to take our water bottles,” Chen said with a worried expression. “What will we do while you’re away?”

“I…we could…” Jackson struggled to think of a solution.

Emily fished in her pocket and brought out the strip of condoms that she had scavenged from Mark’s bag.

“Emily! I hardly think it’s the time for…”

Emily laughed at the Chinese man’s embarrassment.

“For water,” she said. “You can fill one and bring it back. It can hold a lot more than you would think.”

“I wouldn’t imagine Mark would need extra-large,” Jackson muttered.

“They expand, don’t they?” Emily smiled. “Take one, maybe two. We might need the other for later.”

Jackson raised his eyebrow, wondering what Emily had in mind for the final preservative, and guessing that it wasn’t anything to do with intercourse.

“Thanks,” he said. “Good idea, Emily. I will take half the water bottles too, okay? Put together what we have left. Who has some?”

The team looked at each other.

“Only a tiny bit,” Liam said.

“Not much at all,” Chen said, holding out his almost empty bottle.

“Try to conserve what you have. I’ll bring more.”

“I’ve got half a bottle,” Emily offered.

“Same,” Karen said. “I didn’t know when there might be more.”

The pilot nodded. “Brilliant. Pour the dregs together, and Jonathan, you take the empties.”

“I still don’t think you should go alone,” Emily said. “What if that boar is still out there?”

“If there’s one boar, there are definitely more than one. At least we know about them now.” Jackson was pragmatic about the danger.

“And what about the things we don’t know about?” Sarah spoke for the first time since the ruckus with Karen.

“I’ll be careful,” Jackson said. “I’ll be faster alone. I’m fitter than you think, you know.”

No one had said otherwise.

“Okay,” the pilot said, taking it upon himself to green-light the expedition. “Do you know how to tell which way is north? For the map?”

Jackson shook his head.

“Use your watch,” Emily chimed in.

“Someone knows her stuff,” Bellamy smiled.

“It’s most accurate when the sun is at its highest point,” Emily said. “But we know that was over there.” She pointed between the trees to where they had seen the sun earlier that day. “Then find a reference point. The cave will be perfect.
